Spring Arrives: March 7th, 2010

These photos show how my location looks today compared to how it looked in the middle of winter. Although there are still a few piles of melting snow, most of it has melted and the grass is starting to green up. Take a closer look at the long grass along the Jordan River and you will see new, green grass beginning to become visible through the thicker layers of dead, crunchy, brown grass. With the warmer weather this section of the river is entirely thawed and flowing freely, and even saw a small fish! It was about an inch and a half long, mostly silvery with a brownish-blue tint. Seasonal or not, I did notice more trash in the river during this observation than on previous occasions.

The trees around the river are also showing signs of the changing seasons. The woody tree branches are just barely beginning to bud, a few of the dry branches sporting barely visible dark, fuzzy tips. Wrapped around another tree's trunk are the leafless vines of a strong plant from last season. At the base of the tree trunk, beginning at the ground and reaching less than a foot up the tree is a new bright green, leafy vine just starting its climb up the tree. Once again, spring is on its way!
